After making their name with some alarmingly accomplished live performances around town, Dublin quartet The Coldspoon Conspiracy maintain the momentum with the speedy release of their debut album. Recorded in just three days, Plays Well With Others is a good showcase for the band's peculiarly twisted take on post-rock music, which shuns traditional song structures in favour of menacing guitar lines and violent rock-outs. At its best, the effect is highly intriguing, unusually visceral and not a little disturbing. The band's main weakness is the vocals of Pat Cannon, which, while undeniably heartfelt, are not yet distinctive enough to have a real emotional impact. This is a fascinating, worthy debut, which certainly deserves to be heard – but next time out, the Conspiracy need to home their identity just a little bit more.
