The Cardigans - Long Gone Before Daylight
Review Date: 18 March 2003
This time last year, the chances of there ever being another Cardigans album seemed virtually non-existent. Disillusioned with fame and with each other, the Swedish five piece had returned to their homeland and all gone their separate ways. Now, for whatever reason, they've reunited - but sadly, the result wasn't really worth the effort. Long Gone Before Daylight is by some distance the blandest album they've ever made, a dull, lifeless effort containing none of the charm that made them so likeable in the first place. Sure, there's the odd pretty tune - but most of the songs are so toothless, they could have been covered by the Corrs without any bother. Singer Nina Persson, meanwhile, long the emotional centre of the group, sounds like she'd rather be anywhere else but in the studio - which, judging by her recent interviews, may very well have been the case. In their day, The Cardigans were a genuinely brilliant pop band. Sadly, it looks as if that day has now officially passed.
