The Breeders - TK
Review Date: 27 May 2002
Title TK is the album no-one thought The Breeders would ever finish. In all likelihood the Deal sisters themselves probably never thought they'd finish it, what with Kim's creative block and her twin Kelley's well-publicised heroin addiction. But now, after nine years of on-off recording sessions in various locations, here it is - and thankfully, while it's not quite up there with their best work, it won't do their reputation any harm at all. Given its troubled genesis it's hardly surprising that Title TK has a indistinct, sketchy feel to it, with most of the tracks feeling like rough demos that never got around to being finished. For all that, it's often compelling listening, with a throbbing rhythm section that perfectly counters Kim's scratchy-sweet vocal melodies and fuzzily intense guitars. Twisted, intimate and deeply intense, Title TK is no more or less than a good Breeders record. Now that they're back in business, let's hope they go on to make another great one.
