The Beta Band - Hot Shots II

 rated 4

Review Date: 12 July 2001

The Beta Band certainly can't be accused of arrogance - they notoriously declared their debut album to be one of the worst records ever made. Presumably they're happier with this one, even though the last track does contain the line "The music we make is not particularly good." Why they feel the need to run themselves down is a bit of a mystery since on this evidence they're making some of the most original sample-based music around. They don't make it particularly easy for the listener, throwing plenty of bizarre arrangements and quirky snippets of electronic noise into the mix. Still, the album's best moments are truly inspired and the margins of pop music are a more interesting place for the Beta Band's presence.
