Telepopmusik - Genetic World
Review Date: 18 April 2002
The Parisian trio who make up Telepopmusik used to be a rock outfit, before they abandoned their guitars for samplers and became the hottest thing on the French electro scene since Air. Their hotly-awaited debut album is intended as a "global journey" through various electronic-based styles and therein lies the problem - they make the mistake of assuming that because they're good at one thing, they're good at everything. There's a handful of thrilling Kraftwerk-style pop songs here, but far too much of Genetic World is padded out with indifferent house and camp disco music. A decent enough beginning, but if Telepopmusik are to live up to their reputation they need to start playing to their true strengths.
