When Supergrass first appeared at the height of the Britpop craze, they were absurdly young, completely mad-looking and absolutely brimming with promise. A few years on, sadly, they seem to have settled for being just another moderately successful indie band - albeit one with a superior back catalogue of summery pop tunes. Their fourth album finds the Oxford trio breaking absolutely no ground whatsoever, still content to churn out the same old mixture of high-spirited rockers and cheerfully gormless ballads, without any particular sense of style or, indeed, creative ambition. It's an enjoyable listen, but also a frustrating one - you get the impression that this whole pop lark comes so easily to them that they just don't feel the need to try very hard. It's a shame, because while Supergrass a certainly a very good band, they're by no means a great one - and the way things are going, they're never going to become one either. A shame.
