This reviewer was recently stunned to come across a teenager who thought that Tom Dunne had never been anything other than a DJ on Today FM. Time, then, for all such ignoramuses to get acquainted with the work of Something Happens, one of the many Irish bands who should have hit the big time but found themselves hobbled with the ridiculous 'next U2' tag. The self-consciously hip Dubliners were always just a little too complex for the mainstream and a little too pop for indie snobs, and their career was ultimately undone by a couple of rather patchy albums. But at their best they were truly excellent songwriters - and the evidence is here on this sterling compilation, from the thrilling rush of 'Parachute' to the yearning rock anthem 'Petrol'. Now, any chance of a reunion, lads?
