Silver Ray - Humans

 rated 3

Review Date: 14 December 2004

You've probably never heard of Silver Ray, but back in their native Australia they're big news, largely due to the fact that Nick Cave has declared himself a massive fan. The Melbourne trio describe themselves as a post-rock outfit, which is really just a fancy way of saying that they only play instrumentals - grandiose soundtracks to movies that don't exist yet. This might sound a bit on the pretentious side, but in fact the music on Humans is generally playful, inventive and impressively light on its feet. Recorded live in studio, it uses guitar, drums and piano to create a series of sweeping symphonies that can't fail to lift the spirits. Reference points are tricky, but if Crowded House had all come down with sore throats one night, this sounds a bit like the gig they might have played. One for the adventurous.
