Shaggy - Mr. Lover Lover
Review Date: 07 February 2002
This 14-track compilation of Shaggy's greatest hits proves one thing beyond doubt - in pop, find a decent formula and you've got the makings of a steady career. In the case of the lecherous old US Marine the formula is perfectly encapsulated in his 1993 chart-topper Oh Carolina - warbling reggae vocals, crude double entendres and endless, ridiculous boasting about the self-styled sex god's various conquests. At the time everyone had Shaggy down as a one-hit novelty act but in fact he's managed to pull of the same trick every couple of years since, most notably with the infectious Bombastic and the smutty It Wasn't Me, which sailed to number one on both sides of the Atlantic and is, unaccountably, not included here. In fact the tracklisting is heavily weighted towards the earlier hits, which suggests that the Shaggy love machine may finally be beginning to feel the pace. Never mind; as fun, catchy, irredeemably silly party music goes, it doesn't get much better than this.
