Rodrigo y Gabriela - Re-Foc

 rated 3

Review Date: 27 September 2002

The Mexican acoustic guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela have been drawing a strong following on the live Irish circuit beginning with busking sessions on Grafton St. and gaining popularity with support slots for the likes of Damien Rice. They are now able to headline their own shows and have a brand new album to promote in Re-Foc. This is essentially a re-recording of Foc, their previous album that was mostly available at live shows. The duo's brand of guitar playing blends salsa, flamenco, jazz and heavy metal. The latter two mostly being melodies from the classic 'Take 5' and Metallica respectively. Those who haven't seen them in concert may not immediately find the appeal of the album and those who have may find it a slightly poor substitute to their stunning live performances but the production is good enough and you could do a lot worse in terms of a chill-out, relaxing type album.
