R Kelly - Happy People/ U Saved Me
Review Date: 16 September 2004
You've got to hand it to R Kelly - he may still have some rather terrifying child porn charges hanging over him, but the sultry soul man certainly hasn't let all the bad press affect his workrate. His latest effort clocks in at 21 songs spread over two CDs, divided by theme to suit your particular listening mood. Happy People is a sprightly collection of smooth mid-tempo pop, mostly devoted to telling us how much Kelly loves to go out dancing and how beautiful all his girlfriends are. U Saved Me, on the other hand, is an earnest set of devotional gospel songs, solemnly thanking God for being such a powerful presence in his life. You need a strong stomach for some of this stuff, and there's certainly far too much filler here for comfort. But as a demonstration of his never-say-die spirit, it's undoubtedly an impressive achievement.
