Pop Idol - The Big Band Album
Review Date: 01 May 2002
We all know that Simon Cowell has a lot to answer for, but this new album must surely go to the top of the list of his various crimes against pop. Made up of excruciatingly chirpy performances from the 10 Pop Idol finalists, it's a collection of big band standards that were classics in their day but should really never have been let loose in the hands of such limited karaoke artists. If you think Will and Garreth are credible as the new Sinatra and Martin, you'll love it. You also need to have a serious think about where your life is going. Blame Robbie Williams for starting the craze, if you like - but at least Sing When You're Winning had a certain amount of gaudy style. This is just plain cheap.
