Other Voices - Songs From A Room
Review Date: 22 May 2003
Over the last couple of years, a quiet revolution has been taking place on the Irish indie scene. As traditional guitar bands begin to look more and more jaded, a new generation of young, earnest singer-songwriters have stepped forward to take their place. This compilation album - taken from the RTE series of the same name - captures them in all their fledgling glory, with a series of live performances recorded in the hushed surroundings of a Dingle church. Mundy, Damien Rice and Damien Dempsey are clearly the leading lights here - but on this evidence, lesser-known names such as Nina Hynes, Mark Geary and Emmet Tinley are hot on their heels. Meanwhile Jerry Fish, Maria Doyle Kennedy and The Frames, arguably the scene's spiritual forerunners, fly the flag for the old-timers. A few hangers-on aside, this is a fascinating snapshot of an intriguing time for Irish music.
