Since his last proper album six years ago, Trent Reznor has re-located to Los Angeles, got some therapy and even taken up weightlifting. So has America's patron saint of goth finally started to lighten up? Er, not exactly. On With Teeth he sounds as angry as ever, railing against the unfairness of it all in a series of powerful industrial rock songs that trundle along like a metal juggernaut. It steers uncomfortably close to pantomime at times, with Reznor sounding a bit like a teenager throwing a massive tantrum because his parents have told him to tidy his room. On the other hand, his screeching vocals and carefully-honed lyrics have a dramatic impact that it's hard not to have a sneaking admiration for. As an exercise in rallying the forces of darkness, this is certainly worth hearing - but probably best to take it in small doses.
