Nightmares On Wax - Mind Elevation
Review Date: 20 September 2002
George Evelyn is, by his own admission, a bit of a stoner - which probably explains why his band, Nightmares Of Wax, have only made four albums since their classic rave single Dextrous took the charts by storm way back in 1990. Perhaps we shouldn't complain, though - after all it's probably this supremely laid-back approach that makes his intelligent chillout music sound as good as it does. Mind Elevation is an excellent addition to the NOW canon, a sublime blend of slow-burning electro-soul and hazy reggae that's expertly designed to soothe the most stressed-out of souls. While it's mostly instrumental, a handful of vocal contributions really make you sit up and listen - in particular Chyna B's hazy, soul-soaked contribution to 'Date With Destiny' and LSK's Lee Kenny vitriolic rap about the Thatcher era on the memorably bleak '70s80s'. If you're looking for a way to keep that lazy summer mood going just a little bit longer, then look no longer - you've just found it.
