Fans of indie angst who are fed up with Radiohead's new direction might well be tempted to buy the new album from hotly-tipped Muse instead. Unfortunately, however, the trio's second album shows them to be little more than a vaudeville imitation of the real thing. Origin of Symmetry is so over the top it's ridiculous, with some good bombastic guitar work completely overshadowed by Matt Bellamy's hysterical wailing. This kind of thing only works if the lyrics are absolutely brilliant - and sadly, when you get around to making them out, they just sound childish and petulant. The result is an album with far too much energy and not nearly enough subtlety - one of the year's biggest disappointments.
