She's the daughter of Loudon and the sister of Rufus - so it's only natural to hope for weird and wonderful things from the debut album of yet another member of the Wainwright clan. Martha, however, is clearly the quiet one of the family. Her country-folk songs are polished, straightforward and, on first listen, not much to get excited about. Dig a little deeper, however, and it's clear that some powerful demons are being exorcised here. There are intriguing lyrics about fear, vulnerability and men who abandon women, sung in a hazy croon that becomes increasingly hypnotic the more you hear it. Like all great singer-songwriters, she draws you into her world and ends up making you wish you were a part of it. Weird? No. Wonderful? Absolutely.
