Is Madonna past it? The underwhelming reaction to her last couple of albums might have suggested so - but in fact, it's only spurred Mrs Guy Ritchie on to produce one of her best records ever. As the title suggests, Confessions on a Dancefloor is a return to her disco roots, although the Madonna of the 1980s was never quite this camp. With throbbing basslines, swooning synths and tracks that run into each other, it sounds remarkably like a remix album, only one with proper songs and wonderfully catchy Europop. It's not exactly deep - the lyrics are so ropey, it's probably best not to listen to them too closely. But it's confident, sexy and above all, great fun. For once the old cliche is absolutely right; this really is a return to form.
