Luke Kelly - The Performer
Review Date: 14 December 2005
Luke Kelly was a man of many parts - poet, political activist and, against some stiff competition, the hairiest member of the Dubliners. Above all, however, he was a truly phenomenal singer, with a passion and ferocity that sometimes bordered on the frightening. Released to commemorate the 21st anniversary of his death, this album compiles 19 of his best vocal performances from television shows, live concerts and studio outtakes. The rawness of the recordings is somehow appropriate, helping to capture the unvarnished honesty that made Kelly sound like the authentic voice of the Irish working classes. It's also available as a DVD, featuring revealing interviews with his old bandmates as well as younger admirers such as Damien Dempsey and George Murphy.
