Lambchop - Is A Woman
Review Date: 13 February 2002
For a band who claim to have no ambition whatsoever, Nashville 15-strong collective Lambchop are doing remarkably well for themselves - their last album Nixon topped many critics' end-of-year polls and propelled them to the forefront of the burgeoning alt-country scene. Fans of that record may be initially confused by this follow-up, which contains much sparser arrangements and has an understated, ghostly feel to it. What hasn't changed is Kurt Wagner's deep, husky voice, still dissecting life's little frustrations with a mixture of humour and resignation. While some will feel that Is A Woman is just a little too quiet and passionless for its own good, repeated listens reveal more than enough sweet, soulful melodies to keep Lambchop at the head of the pack.
