Lambchop - Aw C'mon/No You C'mon
Review Date: 17 February 2004
Spare a thought for poverty-stricken musicians everywhere. Alt-country outfit Lambchop may be one of the biggest cult bands in the world, but it's only a couple of years since their leader Kurt Wagner felt able to give up his day job laying linoleum. Revelling in this new-found freedom, he decided to write a song a day - and the result is this lengthy double album (actually advertised as two single albums that have to be purchased separately, which is little more than a marketing gimmick). There's little to choose between the two discs, though at a push you could say that Aw C'mon is mostly made up of mournful bar-room waltzes, while No You C'mon is slightly more upbeat and playful. In truth, there's an awful lot of dross here, fragmented instrumentals that really should have been left on the shelf. The best moments, however, are a welcome reminder of why Wagner's melancholy baritone remains one of the most engaging voices in contemporary American music. Overall, worth the effort - but Lambchop newcomers should not start here.
