Kubb - Mother

 rated 4

Review Date: 06 December 2005

Harry Collier got his big break when Rollo Armstrong, brother of Dido and leader of Faithless, heard him singing Happy Birthday in a restaurant. A few months later, the Liverpool-born singer and his band Kubb have become hotly tipped to be the first indie sensations of 2006. Superficially we're in Coldplay/Keane territory here, with lots of piano ballads and plaintive lyrics about relationships that just don't work. But Collier's glorious falsetto adds an extra layer of class to the proceedings, his brooding confessional tone gradually taking hold of the imagination. Mother is a haunting, intense and utterly memorable album - and suggests that Rollo might have a promising future as a talent scout.
