Kicking Against - Nuggets from the Irish Overground
Review Date: 20 October 2002
Finally, a compilation you can listen to and safely proclaim, 'Now that's what I call music!' Kicking Against is just the right education for those outside Ireland as to what's really going on in the Irish music scene. Names you might've heard before like The Frames and David Kitt are placed alongside other up and coming artists like Goodtime John and The Jimmy Cake. Just about every musical genre is catered for here: punk, rock, folk, alt-country, dance and even hip-hop. Creative Controle with the fast-paced, high-adrenaline 'Bloodrush' dishes out the latter genre. Other highlights include the instrumental rock of The Redneck Manifesto and the avant-garde punk of the Warlords of Pez. The best feature of this CD is its multimedia section with band bios and mind-blowing videos by the aforementioned Creative Controle and Warlords of Pez. Maybe I would've chosen a slightly different tracklist but there's no need to complain with this group of 'nuggets' gathered together. Dare I ask for a volume two?
