KT Tunstall - Eye to the Telescope

 rated 3

Review Date: 16 December 2004

Does the world really need another Dido? Maybe not, but it's going to get one - or at least, another Dido wannabe. Katie (KT in text-speak) Tunstall is half Chinese, half Scottish and 100 per cent determined to become a massive star. She might just do it too - her pleasantly wistful songs are traditional enough to be played on daytime radio but also just edgy enough to appeal to the trendier end of the market. Her debut album contains a few jazzy ballads, a couple of pop tracks and, whenever it all threatens to get a bit too easy listening, even a touch of raw blues. The only real problem is that the lyrics are rarely more than adequate, mostly made up of the kind of relationship jargon that scans, fills the space and not much more. Tunstall is clearly a spirited young woman, and her intense, slightly raspy vocals hint at a powerful character. It's just a shame that her songs don't let more of that character shine through.
