Jonny Greenwood - Bodysong

 rated 3

Review Date: 28 November 2003

With Radiohead continuing to dabble in the murky world of electronica, it's hardly surprising that their main guitarist should have fancied working on his own side project. With typical perversity, however, Jonny Greenwood's first solo album contains barely a trace of the instrument which, in his band's glory days, he wielded with such power and skill. Doubling up as the soundtrack to a forthcoming arthouse film by Simon Pummell, Bodysong is a collection of instrumental vignettes, blending keyboards, cello and minimalist percussion tracks. Some of it is spookily atmospheric, some of it merely dull and absolutely none of it sounds anything like Radiohead. It's certainly an interesting curio, but on the whole you can't help feeling that Greenwood should stick to the day job - let's just hope that Thom Yorke gives him some more work soon.
