Jeff Martin - Spoons
Review Date: 23 May 2005
Jeff Martin is a busy bee; not only is he producing his own stuff, he is also a full time member of Halfset - an eclectic 4-piece employing guitar, keyboard, computer, harp, trumpet and, of course, drums - which is not a million miles away from Martin's solo material. Frequently (and inaccurately) described as a singer/songwriter, there is less singing that you might anticipate, even less moaning and no signs of melancholy: unusual in the extreme and not at all unwelcome. Upbeat instrumental arrangements and pleasant background music in a similar style to Xela, but with less emotional depth than say Explosions in the Sky, is the order of the day. While Spoons will not rock your world or change your life, it is an enjoyable diversion and the perfect backdrop soundtrack to lazy Sundays and Summer afternoons.
