If you've never entered the world of Jah Wobble, you'll probably need to take some time to become accustomed to your surroundings. After all, those ridiculously over the top trumpets, grating drum machines and monster basslines can be a little disorientating at the best of times. And then there's those bizarre voiceovers from some bloke droning on about his spiritual crises, coming over like a cross between a cockney Darth Vader and a marginally saner David Icke. No doubt about it, the former Public Image star doesn't make records like anyone else - and in today's conformist music industry, that can only be applauded as a good thing. On the other hand, that doesn't mean that Fly (which doubles up as the title of every track, too) is a particularly satisfying listening experience. Instead of taking us on the spiritual journey that Jah promises, we're instead led down a series of musical cul de sacs - ending up not very far from where we started in the first place. In the end, you're left with the feeling that while eccentricity may be all very well by itself, it would be much better if it went hand in hand with just a tiny bit of self-discipline too.
