The songs of Hefner, a group of rather camp-looking young Londoners, always feel as if they belong in a Cockney musical rather than on the radio alongside their indie rivals. In recent years they've built up something of a cult following - Darren Hayman's comically arch tales of love and urban squalor have even attracted comparisons with Elvis Costello and The Smiths. The music holds him back, however, being a fairly standard blend of Britpop guitars and jaunty brass effects. We Love The City is a very uneven album, but its high spots have a certain geeky charm that makes it difficult to dislike.
