Life isn't easy for Grandaddy. After years as a low-level cult band, these modest country boys are now on the verge of achieving star status - and they're not at all sure how they feel about it. All of which has left them stroking their beards and writing the beautifully catchy songs of introspection, insecurity and self-doubt that make up their third album Sumday. If this all sounds a little on the precious side, it should be noted that the Californians' blueprint of lo-fi psychedelic rock remains fully intact - while frontman Jason Lytle's downbeat, fragile charm retains the ability to melt hearts at fifty paces. Grandaddy may not be the most sophisticated band in the world, but with their independent spirit and unerring ear for lush melodies, they're certainly one of the most likeable. Let's hope they don't head for the hills any time soon.
