Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - How I Long to Feel That Summer in My Heart

 rated 4

Review Date: 27 September 2001

The infectious Patio Song briefly threatened to make Gorky's Zygotic Mynci a mainstream pop act a few years ago, but since then they've gradually subsided into the eccentric, frequently inspired bunch of psychedelic misfits they were always meant to be. Album number seven sees them hone their craft still further, with pianist and guitarist Richard James beginning to challenge frontman Euros Childs as the group's leading songwriter. The mood is restrained and pastoral, but there's a quiet charm about the band's playing and an obvious personal chemistry that prevents them from sliding into tweeness. A million miles away from the bluster of the Manics, Gorky's have a good claim to being the best Welsh band of modern times.
