Alison Goldfrapp has made some dramatic, sensual records with Tricky and Orbital but now she comes into her own, with the aid of film composer Will Gregory. Her breathy vocals are perfectly suited to these rather mournful songs and the cinematic influence is evident in the dramatic orchestration, oddly reminiscent of old Ennio Morricone soundtracks. Although at times it feel a little contrived, for the most part this is stylishly decadent music that should appeal to all fans of film noir.
