Gemma Hayes - Work to a Calm
Review Date: 26 October 2001
This second release from Gemma Hayes displays the yang to the yin of her quiet, more acoustic first EP, '4:35am'. 'Work to a Calm' is the side of her music that she probably would like to assert so that she's not regarded as just another acoustic guitar plucking singer/songwriter. This new venture contains mostly standard rock songs that are somewhat accentuated by Hayes' prominent voice. 'Can't Find Love' is certainly a highlight and even though a thousand songwriters have sung a thousand tunes on the elusiveness of finding a partner, Hayes still sings it in such a way that keeps it fresh and unique. Now that we have heard the yin and the yang we can wait with great anticipation to see how the two come together on Hayes' debut album.
