Gemma Hayes - The Roads Don't Love You

 rated 3

Review Date: 28 October 2005

In an increasingly fickle music business, it's a big risk to take three years between your first and second albums. Gemma Hayes didn't seem to have much choice though, developing writer's block after her acclaimed debut Night On My Side and retreating to a house in Kerry until she got her mojo working again. Ideally, she should have come back with a bang - but instead, The Roads Don't Love You is a decidedly low-key affair. There's some gorgeous melodies here, but also too many tracks that could do with sharper lyrics and a lot more musical oomph. Will the public still love her? This is a a decent album, but it feels more like a holding operation than a giant leap forward. Let's just hope the next one doesn't take so long.
