Proving that today's New York scene isn't all about spiky guitars and skinny ties, Fischerspooner have arrived on the scene with a flashy new brand of electropop to sell. You could call them a triumph of style over substance, but then these boys would probably take that as a compliment - to them the trappings are just as important as what's actually inside the package. That's just as well, really, since away from the glossy magazine spreads and the celebrity fans (the Pet Shop Boys, naturally), Fischerspooner's music is really nothing special. They can certainly pen a catchy tune, and Casey Spooner's alien, emotionless vocals are oddly engaging - but ultimately there's little on #1 that the likes of New Order or Eurhythmics haven't already done better. Still, while they may fall some way short of their lofty goals, you can't help but admire Fischerspooner for having the self-belief to try.
