You've probably heard of Fight Like Apes by now; and if you haven't, get ready to. This Dublin quartet have fast become one of the city's hottest acts in recent months, and now, with the release of their debut EP (the extravagantly-titled 'How Am I Supposed to Kill You If You Have All the Guns?') are set to cement their footing on everyone's 'Top Tip' lists. Running time is a mere twelve minutes long, but that just makes the four tracks here all the sweeter. Jake Summers - named for a character from '90s teen comedy California Dreams (or a porn star - your choice) - is a dizzy punk-synth explosion, with singer MayKay's scratchy yelp eliciting comparisons with Karen O or Siouxsie Sioux; You Are the Hat's disconcerting electro-scuzz is My Bloody Valentine-esque, while the more structured Battlestations is a twisted, haphazard synthfest that sounds like a modern take on an '80s video nasty compilation. The real gem here, however, is the almost physically stunning Lend Me Your Face, a razor-sharp peal of punk thunder that sees MayKay yowl 'I wanna put you in a cast / And cast off my memories of where you been at'. How Am I Supposed to Kill You.. is an absolute sucker-punch of a debut release from a band who could well fill the 'Next Big Thing' slot that the now-defunct Immediate have left vacant.
