Fatboy Slim - Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars
Review Date: 20 November 2000
By now the superstar DJ Norman Cook is so successful he can pretty much do what he wants; for his third album as Fatboy Slim, he's teamed up with vocalists as diverse as Macy Gray and Jim Morrisson (dead for 30 years but present here through the magic of sampling). But effectively this is more of the same: carefree, hedonistic dance music which aspires to do no more than provide a catchy soundtrack for a night on the tiles (and probably a few advertisements). It's less rigorous than his best though; there are plenty more hits here, but over the course of an album Cook's methods begin to sound more than a little mechanical. A bit disappointing.
