Eva Cassidy - Imagine

 rated 3

Review Date: 28 August 2002

It's six years now since the Washington singer Eva Cassidy lost her battle with cancer, having never achieved the success that her homespun talents surely deserved. Now that she's become famous through the bestselling posthumous Songbird, however, it was inevitable that her record company would insist on another trawl through the archives for some more unreleased recordings. Thankfully, this plainly-packaged new collection seems to have been assembled with some sensitivity, and, while clearly inferior to Songbird, is far more tasteful than might have been feared. Drawn from disparate sources, the tracks here are mostly gentle, folksy takes on old standards such as 'Fever', 'It Doesn't Matter Any More' and 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes?' each one delivered with Cassidy's familiar expressiveness and warmth. Overall, Imagine just about passes muster as a reasonable footnote to a career cut tragically short - but please, let the Eva Cassidy story rest here
