Electric Six - Senor Smoke

 rated 3

Review Date: 05 March 2005

Electric Six shouldn't be taken too seriously. Their high-camp disco tunes make them sound like a Scissors Sisters tribute band, complete with bombastic production and surreal lyrics that are either deeply pretentious or just plain stupid. Since their first album, it turns out that the original line-up have all departed, with the sole exception of the extremely odd vocalist Dick Valentine. With the same old dancefloor karaoke formula still intact, however, old fans will barely notice the difference. And if there's nothing quite as immediate as their novelty hit 'Gay Bar', there's still plenty of wryly amusing songs about bedroom etiquette, American hipsters and the joys of being a loser. Sure, Electric Six are a one-joke outfit and the joke is already beginning to wear a little thin. But for the moment at least, it's fun to have them around.
