Ten years ago, Dot Allison appeared to be on the cusp of fame with the hotly-tipped chillout merchants One Dove. Tragically, a terrible car accident put the Edinburgh-born singer out of action for some years and only recently has she begun to get her career back on track. You just can't keep a good voice down, however, and We Are Science is probably the best thing she's ever done - a blissfully dreamy collection of ethereal torch songs, whose automated beats and churning synths are skillfully humanised by Allison's Nico-esque sense of style. At times her frostily detached voice gets lost amidst the elaborate production and the debt to old Madchester bands such as Joy Division becomes just a little too obvious. These are only small flaws, however, in what's as classy a pop package as you're likely to come across this year. Highly recommended.
