We don't usually take time out of our busy schedules to review compilations but we couldn't let this "inside job" pass. Some cunning creature has scuttled off with a collection of what Domino Records have on offer see, and just as well, considering that the label - like their artists - shy so fervently away from self promotion. The first of 14 tracks is a tantalising nibble from Psapp's forthcoming album. You might recognise the London based duo's quirky work from such shows as Grey's Anatomy, Nip/Tuck and The OC. Second up is Adem, with a track from his second album Love and Other Planets (out April 28th, buy it). A beautifully constructed song complete with handclapped percussion, roughly manipulated double bass, a thumb piano and Rufus-like vocals. Third up is Franz Ferdinand in epic Celtic form, and following them is The Kills duo with their usual minimalist PJ Harvey tribute. Current music darlings Archie Bronson Outfit take up position 5 with the well-rounded vocals and big beat sound of rollicking countdown song "Dart for my Sweetheart", followed seamlessly by Sons And Daughters' dirt road rock off "Taste The Last Girl". We're about half way through so bring out the Test Icicles - doing whatever everyone else is doing of late, only marginally better. Track 8 sees Clearlake's fantastic 60s beat group style showcased perfectly in "It's Getting Light Outside", Quasi (one of the few American acts in the line-up) rock out White Stripes style with "Peace and Love", and then the Bonnie Prince wraps his brooding arms around Elton John's "Daniel", with Tortoise providing the elbow. Hebden in his Four Tet guise gives us a base fuelled electro onslaught from his latest album, The Television Personalities purvey an old school Brit punk rendition of Frere Jacques, and Junior Boys provide a track that truly embodies 90s group the Beloved. Finally, it's track 14 and it's Juana Molina. The Argentinean's track "La Verdad" with its sweet, wholesome sound and sinister electronic twist had me eyeing the promo for her impending album 'Son' eagerly from across the desk. It's out May 1st. In short - high points include; Psapp, Adem, Archie Bronson Outift, Clearlake and Juana Molina. Low points - precious few.
