Around the time of the last World Cup, the word was that the Scots knew they were doomed when Del Amitri were commissioned to write the team's official song. After all, this Glaswegian outfit have always been amongst pop's most consistent underachievers, remaining relentlessly unfashionable both before and after their brief burst of popularity in the late 80s. The band's new effort deserves attention, however, since by their own account it represents a determined attempt to overhaul their soft-rock sound in favour of something more adventurous. What this means, in effect, is that Justin Currie's low-key tales of urban losers are now backed with drum machines and stately beats - nothing radical, admittedly, but the results are rarely less than pleasantly enjoyable. Well-crafted, subdued and delicately melodic, Can You Do Me Good? suggests that there's plenty of life left in Del Amitri yet - if they can ignore the sneerers, of course.
