Cliff Richard - Something's Goin' On
Review Date: 02 November 2004
It's a long, long time since Cliff Richard made a decent record - so full credit to him for trying something new this time. The Peter Pan of pop has re-located to Nashville, hired a team of top country songwriters and musicians and, against all the odds, produced his most accomplished album in donkey's years. The subject matter, admittedly, hasn't changed that much - half the songs are about how much he loves his woman, the other half are about how much he loves God. The woman, of course, doesn't exist - as for God, you'll have to make up your own mind. Anyway, the tunes are hummable, the band are sturdy and Cliff manages to remind us that behind the smarmy image, he's always been a pretty decent singer. If nothing else, a banker for Granny's Christmas stocking.
