Broadcast - Haha Sound
Review Date: 18 August 2003
Broadcast are a very odd group indeed. The Birmingham trio seem to exist almost entirely within their own little world, a place where time doesn't exist, the sun doesn't shine and people communicate largely by staring blankly at each other. Combine this bleak worldview with a distinctly avant-garde brand of electronica and you've got one of the most intriguing outfits on the post-rock scene. Haha Sound (deeply ironic title, that) has been three years in the making but that time has certainly been well spent - everything here has been calculated with absolute precision, from the glacial synth melodies to Trish Keenan's eerily dispassionate vocals. Not exactly a record to get you up in the morning - but as a soundtrack to dismal autumn evenings, not far short of perfect.
