He's only two albums into his career, but already it's clear that Baxter Dury is a much more melancholic character than his late father Ian. Fortunately, Floor Show offers plenty of evidence to prove that the songwriting talent has been safely passed on to the next generation. His backing band has been partly plucked from Spiritualized, and you can hear their influence in the droning beats, hazy guitars and distinctly woozy vocals. The lyrics don't go into specifics, but there's a mood of quiet despair about these beatifully-crafted songs that suggests Baxter has recently endured a few dark nights of the soul. If we're all in the gutter and some of us are gazing at the stars, it follows that some of us are gazing at the gutter. This memorably gloomy album suggests that's not such a bad choice.
