Basement Jaxx have always been more than just another dance band. Thanks to their wide range of influences, from punk garage to calypso-funk, the Brixton duo have always appealed to rockers as much as clubbers. Now they've made their most ambitious album yet - with results that are occasionally exhausting but more often exhilarating. Everything but the kitchen sink has been thrown into Kish Kash, a heady mixture of electronica, soul, electroclash and 1970s disco, whipped up into the band's trademark euphoric rush. And just to add to the bewildering variety of the music, the Jaxx have drafted in a host of guest vocalists to confuse things even further, including Bellrays vocalist Lisa Kekaula, punk legend Siouxsie Sioux and the man of the moment, Mercury Prize winner Dizzee Rascal. It drifts a little at times, and the jollity can feel a little forced. But for the most part Kish Kash is a pulsating, life-affirming album that's guaranteed to pep up any flagging house party.
