He may be a bona fide pop star these days, but with his woolly hat and straggly beard, Damon Gough (aka Badly Drawn Boy), still looks like nothing so much as a semi-professional singing dustman. It comes as something of a shock, then, to find that his third album proper (following the Mercury-winning Hour Of The Bewilderbeast and the soundtrack to About A Boy), sounds like nothing so much as a great lost Wings album from the mid-70s. With the most straightforward, cohesive set of songs he's written to date, Gough sounds more self-assured than he ever has before. And yet, while his craftsmanship is as impressive as ever, there's a pristine quality to the sound here that doesn't quite suit his quirky arrangements and surreal lyrics. You have to applaud someone who crams so many ideas on a single album as Gough has done here, but there's no getting away from the fact that only about half off them have come off. Have You Fed The Fish? Isn't a bad album by any means - but by Gough's former high standards, it's just a little bit disappointing.
