Autamata aren't so much a band as a collective. Founded by Mayo man Ken McHugh a couple of years ago, it's already been a vehicle for some of the most talented people on the Dublin indie scene. Their second album is an impressively eclectic affair, containing elements of folktronica, electro-pop and bass-heavy funk. It may sound a bit too diverse to hang together, but the crucial unifying element is the Tyco Brahe's Carol Keogh, who lends her wonderfully breathy vocals to eight of the 13 tracks here. Elsewhere there's singing and lyrical contributions from newcomer Sarah Verdon, energetic drumming from Halite's Graham Hopkins and even a slightly gooey performance from McHugh himself. The album is well named - just like a really good collection of short stories, you're never quite sure what to expect next. Impressive stuff.
