Venue Profile: The Abbey Theatre
17 January 2012 (Theatre Profile)
Profiles by: Caomhan Keane and Lauren O'Toole
Over the last few weeks, as the world of theatre has relaxed to a steady pace after the madness of the Absolut Fringe and The Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival, we decided also to take a step back and look at the venues that we've been sending you to in 2011. Who goes there, what can you expect to see there, what's the style and where's good for a drink before and after? If you're not yet familiar with all the main theatre venues, this ought to help you out. This time we are looking at The Abbey Theatre.
Who is in the audience?
They're a worthy lot are the boys and girls who make up an Abbey audience. So lots of people who work in 'the arts', your more artsy TDs, your mam and dad on a cultured evening and the patched elbow brigade.
What's on the stage?
Contemporary spins on classic tales, people of international renown, there's generally an annual stab at Shakespeare and an attempt to reflect what is going on in the world.
What should you wear?
It's all about the theatre here so wear what you want. But haphazard formal seems to be the preferred preening gear.
Amenities
Grab a window seat to watch the junkies arguing below, or swivel round and watch the attention junkies order at the well-stocked bar. There is a shocking number of toilets for such a big theatre.
Where's good for a pre-theatre meal?
Le Bon Crubeen on Talbot Street. No question about it. 101 Talbot is also nice and not too dear.
And for a post-show drink?
The closing of The Plough has seen the majority return to The Flowing Tide. The Sackville Lounge is also an option but call us lazy or unadventurous, we prefer the Abbey bar itself.
