The GALAS 2011
19 October 2011 (Preview)
Words: Robin Murray
Queers and friends of queers, you are cordially invited to the third annual GALAs (Gay and Lesbian Awards)!
Organised by the National Lesbian and Gay Federation, the GALAs celebrates efforts made by individuals and companies in such areas as employment, business, media, broadcasting, arts and entertainment.
This year's nominees include President Mc Aleese, Marriage Equality campaigners, the Ireland AM team and internationally-acclaimed author, Emma O'Donoghue.
Nominations were submitted from the public in twelve of of fourteen categories, with the public also selecting the winner of Irish Entertainer/Artist of the Year. Amongst those in the running for that award are singer-songwriter, Wallis Bird and author Emma O'Donoghue, whose book, Room, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize last year.
Other categories include Noel Walsh HIV Activist of the Year, Community Organisation of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and The International Award, for which the winner will receive a bursary of €2,000 to help further their cause.
Among those nominated for Event of the Year is Alternative Miss Ireland; it was announced only last week that the show would be finishing in 2012, so this will be the event's second-last chance of nabbing the prize.
Nominees range from tech giants IBM and Google (who are both up for Employer of the Year) to individuals making a contribution in their local communities.
This show will be presented by Off The Rails stars, Brendan Courtney and Sonya Lennon, so expect a fun and stylish night.
So if you're lucky enough to have nabbed tickets - we just sold out our lot - it's this Saturday - there'll be celebs galore and what's more, it's a really good cause.
The GALAs are being held on Saturday the 22nd October in The Sugar Club, Leeson Street. Doors open at 19.30.
