Five Must See Movies For Autumn

The Ides of March
October 28th
George Clooney directs a stunning cast in this politically charged thriller that has gone down a storm at various film festivals. Ryan Gosling is the lead this time, playing a political strategist for Clooney's libertarian senator's campaign. Based on the acclaimed play, the film is also allegedly loosely linked to the failed presidential campaign of 2004 candidate Howard Dean. Dean shot out of the gates with his passionate, genuinely angry speeches at the way George W. Bush and his administration had handled the war on Iraq. 'Ides' apparently moves more like a thriller than a political satire, and is considered an early frontrunner for Oscar glory.

Drive
September 22nd
I've actually seen this one and already bestowed a glowing five star review on it - yes it's that good. It just exudes atmosphere in spades, and is one of the best crime films I've seen in a long time. A big part of what makes it work is Ryan Gosling - all quiet intensity and repressed anger. When he does snap, he does so so violently you'll be wincing looking at the screen. In the flick Gosling is a stunt driver and mechanic who moonlights as a getaway driver for thieves; they get him for five minutes either side of the job, and not a minute more. When he meets Carey Mulligan's sweet neighbour, a romance blossoms - until her old man gets out of the joint. Wonderful film.

The Thing
December 4th
Not a remake but actually a prequel to John Carpenter's brilliantly innovative science fiction classic, this flick has been garnering serious buzz since a very cool trailer debuted online months ago. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is the lead this time, while she's joined by up and coming Aussie star Joel Edgerton. Matthijs van Heijningen makes his feature directing debut on the film. Winstead looks better in snow boots than Kurt

Warrior
September 23rd
The first true MMA flick, Warrior has two increasingly credible young movie stars in the main roles, joined by a Hollywood veteran. Tom Hardy and Joe Edgerton play brothers forced back into the world of mixed martial arts who are on a collision course to fight each other. Nick Nolte is their abusive father, looking to reconnect with both of his sons after years of silence. Reviews for this one have seen it compared it to Rocky and Raging Bull - can't really get more of a ringing endorcement than that. I'm a huge UFC fan, so looking forward to seeing talented comedian Bryan Callen do his best Joe Rogan impression as well.

Tower Hiest
November 4th
I never thought I'd be previewing a Brett Ratner film as a "must see" but this star-heavy blockbuster is apparently a lot of fun. Ben Stiller stars as a blue collar worker who has his pension swiped by Alan Alda's unscrupulous rich dude, so he and his fellow co-workers - including Casey Affleck - enlist Eddie Murphy's ex-con to rob their dough back. Very much an ensemble by the sounds of it, 'Heist' is being heralded as a return to form for Murphy who has bagged the Oscar hosting gig on account of some of the early buzz brimming in Hollywood. It can't be any worse than the last Rush Hour, but in fairness to Ratner he also directed the underrated Family Man.

Cannot WAIT for Warrior. The Thing could really go either way. Finger's crossed it's a good one. Tower Heist, though? Really?
